5 Reasons You’ll Love Prairie Village

The charming town of Prairie Village, Kansas was the dream of famous Country Club Plaza developer J.C. Nichols, and it was officially recognized as a city in 1951. With a residential population of 21,700, it is the 6th largest city in suburban Johnson County, and has won several national and regional awards over the past 50 years for its livability and design.

Outstanding school system

Children in Prairie Village attend the award-winning Shawnee Mission school district, which has 27,695 students, 5 high schools, 5 middle schools, and 33 elementary schools. There are also 3 private schools to choose from in the area. Shawnee Mission high schools were recently recognized by The Washington Post as among the top-performing schools in the country, and produced 21 national merit finalist scholars last year—with $32 million in scholarship offers to graduates. In fact, 70% of the teachers in this district have a Master’s degree (or higher).

Sophisticated dining

If you enjoy fine dining, then Prairie Village is a great place to call home. BRGR, Story, Café Provence, and Urban Table have all been noted for their eclectic menus and sophisticated tastes. Try the paté de campagne at Café Provence, the smoked duck empanadas at Story, or the artichoke fritters at Urban Table.

Excellent shopping

Prairie Village has 4 major neighborhood shopping destinations, including Corinth Square Shopping Center, State Line Road Shopping Center, and Meadowbrook Shopping Center. But visitors’ favorite destination by far is the Prairie Village Shopping Center, with its quaint, outdoor “square” that is perfect for browsing it’s 50 shops—or grabbing a bite to eat.

Award-winning city

Prairie Village has been the recipient of numerous awards over the years, including a Top 5—America’s Best Suburb by Business Insider, #1 Smartest City in Kansas by Zippia, and 2nd Safest City in Kansas by BackgroundChecks.org. For homebuyers, it also ranks as a Top 10—Best Places to Retire in Kansas (Smart Asset) and Top 10—Best Kansas City Suburb for Young Professionals (Movoto). It has also been a Tree City USA for 17 years running.

Redevelopment of Meadowbrook Country Club

Prairie Village recently purchased 80 acres of property to redevelop for use as a major Johnson County park—and will fund up to $6 million of park improvements on the land. They’ve also earmarked 40 acres for the development of housing, luxury apartments, and the city’s first hotel.
